smart has put its first sedan on sale in China. The #6 EHD is a plug-in-hybrid fastback and the largest car the brand has built, a clear step away from the two-seat city cars smart was once known for. smart is the 50:50 joint venture between Geely and Mercedes-Benz: design is led by Mercedes in Germany, the engineering comes from Geely.
The #6 uses Geely’s SEA platform. It is 4,906 mm long and 1,922 mm wide on a 2,926 mm wheelbase, with a 525-litre boot under the liftback tailgate.
Powertrain. The EHD system pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine making 163 hp with an electric motor rated at 273 hp, for a combined 435 hp and 635 Nm. It is front-wheel drive only. The entry 1675 Pro carries a 20 kWh battery for 135 km of electric-only range (CLTC) and a 7.1-second 0 to 100 km/h time. The 1810 Max and Ultra use a 41.46 kWh pack for 285 km of electric range and 6.7 seconds to 100 km/h.
Inside and out. A LiDAR unit is standard on every version. The dashboard carries a 10.2-inch driver’s display and two 13-inch screens, with a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise and two-zone climate. Exterior details include slim headlights, flush door handles and a full-width tail light. The Max and Ultra add a lifting rear spoiler, and the Ultra goes further with matrix headlights and PixelTalk screens set inside the lights. Higher trims add ventilated and massaging front seats plus a head-up display.
Pricing. The #6 runs from 179,900 yuan (about $25,100) for the 1675 Pro to 229,900 yuan (about $32,100) for the 1810 Ultra. These are the on-sale guide prices; they landed below the 189,900-yuan figure smart had floated at the pre-sale. No markets outside China have been announced.
