GermanyThe XC40 debuted in 2017 and has not had a full restyling since. Volvo has now given it one, alongside the electric EX40 and EC40 that share its body - the first time all three 40-series badges have moved together. All three are built at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium.
What changed
The front end is new across all three cars: Matrix LED “Thor’s hammer” headlights, a new grille panel, bonnet, wings and bumper. The XC40 and EX40 also get new tail lights and a new tailgate; the EC40’s fastback rear is largely unchanged. Inside, all three gain an 11.2-inch infotainment screen running a new system with Google’s Gemini voice assistant.
Safety hardware is new across the range: a new front camera, new radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors feed a 360-degree camera view that now renders in 3D, and the car can warn of a door opening into the path of an approaching cyclist.
Powertrains carry over
None of the three cars change mechanically. The XC40 stays a 48V mild-hybrid petrol car, offered with 163 or 197 hp driving the front wheels. The electric EX40 and EC40 continue with the same three-tier lineup, from a 235 hp single-motor car up to a 436 hp all-wheel-drive P8 Performance, with as much as 583 km of WLTP range on the EC40’s Long Range version.
Pricing
German pricing starts at €43,990 for the XC40 B3, rising to €48,990 for the B4. The EX40 starts at €47,490 and the EC40 at €51,890, both for the single-motor P5 Electric.
