The Volvo XC40 is a compact SUV built on Volvo’s CMA platform, the same architecture underpinning the Volvo C40, EX40 and the Polestar 2. Since the 2024 model year, Volvo has split the nameplate in two: the battery-electric version now sells as the EX40, leaving the XC40 name for the mild-hybrid petrol lineup exclusively. In 2026 the XC40 received its first full restyling since debuting in 2017, carried out together with the electric EX40 and EC40, all three built at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium.
The facelift brings a new front end with Matrix LED “Thor’s hammer” headlights, a new grille, bonnet, wings, bumper, tail lights and tailgate. Inside, the XC40 gains an 11.2-inch infotainment screen running a new system with Google’s Gemini voice assistant. Safety hardware is new too: a new front camera, new radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors feed a 360-degree camera view that now renders in 3D, and the car can warn of a door opening into the path of an approaching cyclist.
Buyers choose between two 48V mild-hybrid versions of the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, both driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Volvo quotes outputs in metric horsepower (PS). The B3 produces 163 PS (161 hp) and 265 Nm of torque, reaching 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. The B4 raises that to 197 PS (194 hp) and 300 Nm, cutting the sprint to 7.6 seconds. Volvo UK quotes WLTP combined economy of 39.2 to 42.7 mpg for both engines. The mild-hybrid system recovers braking energy to assist the petrol engine rather than to power the car on its own. Boot space is 443 litres to the window line.

The B4 is not offered on either market’s entry trim. Trim for trim it costs €2,100 more in Germany and £1,150 (~$1,600) more in the UK.

All prices here are manufacturer list prices including VAT, before delivery and registration. In Germany the XC40 runs from €43,990 for the B3 Essential to €56,190 for the B4 Ultra Black Edition. In the UK it runs from £35,445 (~$48,600) for the B3 Core to £45,095 (~$61,800) for the B4 Ultra Black Edition. Volvo UK’s on-the-road price, which adds delivery, number plates, first-year road tax and the registration fee, starts at £36,860 (~$50,500). The XC40 measures 4,440 mm long, 1,863 mm wide and 1,657 mm tall.
