The Volvo EX40 is the electric compact SUV that used to be sold as the XC40 Recharge, split into its own nameplate in 2023 and now facelifted alongside its XC40 and EC40 siblings. It shares its body and its Ghent, Belgium production line with the petrol XC40, but nothing under the skin: every EX40 is battery-electric. In Volvo’s wider EV range it sits above the smaller EX30 and below the larger EX60 and EX90.
The facelift brings a redesigned front end with Matrix LED “Thor’s hammer” headlights, a new grille panel, bonnet, wings and bumper, plus new tail lights and a new tailgate at the rear. The lineup runs three deep: a 235 hp P5 Electric on a 70 kWh battery for 477 km WLTP, a 248 hp P5 Long Range on an 82 kWh pack for up to 576 km, and a 436 hp all-wheel-drive P8 Performance rated at 538 km with a 4.6-second 0-100 km/h time. All three share a 420 Nm torque figure on the single-motor cars and 670 Nm on the P8, plus a 180 km/h top speed.
Inside, the EX40 gains an 11.2-inch infotainment screen running a new system with Google’s Gemini voice assistant. Safety hardware is new across the board: a new front camera, new radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors feed a 360-degree camera view that now renders in 3D, and the car can warn of a door opening into an approaching cyclist.
German pricing starts at €47,490 for the P5 Electric, rising to €53,090 for the P5 Long Range and €60,590 for the P8 Performance AWD.
