The Volvo EC40 is the fastback-roofed half of Volvo’s electric 40-series pair, sharing its floor, motors and batteries with the EX40 but trading the SUV’s upright tailgate for a sloping coupe-like rear. Both are built on the same line at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium, alongside the mild-hybrid XC40, and have now been facelifted together.
The update brings the same front-end redesign as the EX40 - Matrix LED “Thor’s hammer” headlights, a new grille panel, bonnet, wings and bumper - though Volvo left the EC40’s own rear end largely alone. The powertrain lineup mirrors the EX40’s: a 235 hp P5 Electric on a 70 kWh battery, a 248 hp P5 Long Range on an 82 kWh pack rated at up to 583 km WLTP, and a 436 hp all-wheel-drive P8 Performance doing 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The fastback’s slipperier shape is why its Long Range figure edges past the EX40’s on the same battery.
Cabin changes match the EX40 too: an 11.2-inch infotainment screen with a new system and the Gemini voice assistant, plus a new front camera, new radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors behind a 360-degree camera view that now renders in 3D and warns of doors opening into an approaching cyclist.
German pricing runs from €51,890 for the P5 Electric to €54,690 for the P5 Long Range and €64,990 for the P8 Performance AWD - each tier priced a little above its EX40 equivalent.
