September’s 108,778 new-vehicle sales split almost evenly between battery-electric cars, petrol and diesel, the first two 269 sales apart.

Hybrids (17,843) and plug-in hybrids (10,072) are counted separately from EVs. Plug-in hybrids rose 122.7% and hybrids 20.7%.

The lead covers the month only. Year to date, petrol still holds 28.2% of the market and diesel 24.3%, against 18.9% for EVs.

Toyota remained the largest brand on 17,682 sales, down 3.5%. BYD was second on 8,191, up 61.1%, followed by Ford on 7,592, Kia on 5,901 and Mazda on 5,702.

The total combines two sources. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS report counted 102,924 sales, and the Electric Vehicle Council’s data added 5,854 for Tesla and Polestar, which do not report through VFACTS. Cadillac, Mahindra and Smart publish figures in neither report, so they are not in these totals.

BYD cut the Atto 1 Essential to A$19,990 (~$14,300) drive-away in mid-September, level with the MG 3 Vibe as the cheapest new car in Australia.
