Overview

AMG GT SUV platform and positioning

The AMG GT SUV is the first full-size SUV Mercedes-AMG has developed from scratch in its 59-year history, and the second car on the AMG.EA electric platform after the AMG GT 4-door. It measures 5,084 mm long and 1,656 mm tall on a 3,040 mm wheelbase, with a 607-litre boot and a 78-litre front trunk. Mercedes builds it in Hall 32 of its Sindelfingen plant, which was converted for AMG.EA, with the body shell and paint done on site.

AMG GT SUV powertrain and range

The line-up has three versions, all with AWD. The GT 53 uses two motors and the 106 kWh pack. The GT 55 and GT 63 use three axial-flux motors, and Mercedes lists both packs for them, 106 kWh and 128 kWh. In the GT 63 the motors peak at 860 kW (1,169 PS) with 530 kW sustained, and 0-100 km/h takes 2.7 s, or 2.5 s measured with a one-foot rollout. On the GT 53 the front motor is decoupled under light load and the rear axle runs through a two-speed gearbox.

WLTP range is 597-668 km on the GT 53 and 525-585 km (106 kWh) or 620-700 km (128 kWh) on the GT 55 and GT 63. Top speeds of 250 km/h (GT 53) and 270 km/h need the AMG Driver’s Package. Mercedes labels all figures provisional until type approval.

Charging

The 106 kWh pack charges at up to 600 kW DC and the 128 kWh pack at up to 710 kW. From 10 to 80% takes up to 11 minutes on the smaller pack and up to 12 on the larger one, and a 400 kW charger needs 14 or 16 minutes. The car can switch from 800 V to 400 V for lower-powered chargers and supports CCS2, GB/T, CHAdeMO, CCS1 and NACS.

Inside the AMG GT SUV

The driver sits low rather than in a raised SUV position, behind a 10.2-inch instrument cluster and an angled 14.0-inch central display. On the GT 55 and GT 63 three rotary controls, the AMG Race Engineer, adjust throttle response, cornering behaviour and slip. The AMGFORCE Sport+ programme adds a V8 sound (a six-cylinder one on the GT 53), simulated shifts and seat shakers.

AMG GT SUV price and trims

The GT 53 costs from 113,050 euros in Germany, including 19% VAT. Prices for the GT 55 and GT 63 have not been published. Kerb weight runs from 2,525 kg for the GT 53 to 2,715 kg for the GT 55 with the larger pack.
