The ID.Era 9X is SAIC-Volkswagen’s first range-extender model and, at 5,207 mm long, the largest SUV in the Volkswagen Group’s global lineup. It went on sale in China in April 2026, developed specifically for the domestic market through the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture.
Powertrain. The 9X is an EREV: a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 141 hp works purely as a generator and never drives the wheels. Two electric motors deliver a combined 496 hp on the entry Pro and Max trims, rising to 510 hp on the top Ultra trim, which reaches 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Two battery packs are offered, 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh, giving 347 km and 406 km of electric-only range on the CLTC cycle respectively. With the range extender running, combined range reaches past 1,600 km. The 9X supports 800V charging, with a 10-80% top-up in 16.5 minutes.
Chassis and technology. All trims use dual-motor all-wheel drive, paired with rear-wheel steering for a 4.85-metre turning radius and dual-chamber air suspension that adjusts ground clearance by up to 150 mm. The cabin seats six across three rows in a 2+2+2 layout, with driver assistance built around a roof-mounted lidar sensor.
Design and pricing. The 9X carries Volkswagen’s ID.Era styling, with pop-out door handles and a 3,070 mm wheelbase. It launched with three trims, Pro, Max and Ultra, priced from 309,800 to 349,800 yuan (~$46,000–52,000).
