The Times reports that JLR has paused work on the next-generation Defender, pushing the full electric version into the 2030s. Staff were told the reason is that the current car keeps selling, at around 110,000 units a year. What JLR has confirmed itself is separate: a smaller Defender-family model on the EMA platform, now offered as a hybrid as well as an EV.

That arrangement started in 1983 as a condition of entry, and it has since produced badges that exist nowhere else: Jetta, Wuling, and AUDI in block capitals with no rings. Who holds which half, which brands the ventures invented for themselves, and which of the old partnerships have quietly ended.
Most European badges trace back to about five mega-groups - Volkswagen, Stellantis, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Renault. But several beloved European brands are now owned abroad, in China, India and the UAE, and a few Chinese and joint-venture names now sell under European flags. Here is who owns what in 2026.
Land Rover is a marque of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), headquartered in Coventry, UK, and owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Motors. It built the first Range Rover in 1970 and the first Land Rover in 1948.
Since JLR’s 2023 reorganisation the company markets Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar as four separate brands, and keeps Land Rover as the endorsing marque that appears on and inside the three SUV brands’ cars. Under that arrangement the Defender and Discovery families sit here; Range Rover has its own page. JLR is transitioning to full electric, and the first battery-powered Range Rover went on sale in September 2026.
