ChinaStelato has opened preorders for the G9, the second model from BAIC and Huawei’s joint brand after the S9 sedan. Prices run from ¥439,800 to ¥559,800 ($64,200 to $81,700) across the range, and the brand reported 5,100 orders in the first two hours.
What separates the G9 from most Chinese SUVs at this money is how much of the chassis hardware is standard rather than optional. All-wheel drive, air suspension, adaptive dampers and rear-wheel steering are fitted to every version, on an 800V electrical architecture. That is a specification usually reached by ticking boxes, and it sets the entry price accordingly.
Two powertrains share one output figure. The EREV pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine of 160 hp, which only ever runs as a generator, with two electric motors making a combined 594 hp; battery capacity is 56 or 75.4 kWh, worth up to 405 km of electric CLTC range and 1,366 km in total. The EV drops the engine, keeps the 594 hp, and takes a 120 kWh pack for 728 km CLTC. Stelato has not published a variant-by-variant price split within the announced range.
The body measures 5,206 mm long, 2,050 mm wide and 1,897 mm tall on a 3,160 mm wheelbase, stretching to 5,377 mm when the externally mounted spare wheel is fitted to the split tailgate. Five and six-seat cabins are offered. There are three screens across the front and a ceiling-mounted display for the rear, where the seats heat, ventilate and massage. Towing capacity is 2,000 kg.
The options list is where the G9 argues for its off-road styling instead of just wearing it. Buyers can add the external spare, projector-equipped headlights, a roof tent reachable from inside the cabin, an awning, and a fold-out table built into the tailgate. Whether the rest of the car backs that up is a question for the first road tests; the hardware, at least, is not decorative.
