BMW iX4 platform and positioning
The iX4 is the SUV coupe of BMW’s Neue Klasse family, following the iX3 SUV and the i3 sedan onto the electric platform. It takes the iX3’s 2,897 mm wheelbase and 4,782 mm length and lowers the roof to 1,595 mm with a sloping tail. Production is at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, alongside the iX3.
BMW iX4 powertrain and range
All three versions have a motor on each axle. The 40 xDrive makes 275 kW (369 hp) and 520 Nm from an 82.6 kWh usable battery, reaching 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds with up to 638 km of WLTP range. The 50 xDrive has 345 kW (463 hp), 645 Nm and a 108.7 kWh usable battery (112.2 kWh in BMW USA’s release), covering up to 828 km and reaching 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The M60 xDrive has 450 kW (603 hp) and 875 Nm, does 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, tops out at an electronically limited 240 km/h and is rated at up to 777 km. BMW has not published its battery size.
The sixth-generation eDrive uses cylindrical battery cells and an 800-volt system. The 50 xDrive charges at up to 400 kW DC, from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes, and adds up to 387 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The system can also supply power back out through bidirectional charging.
Inside the BMW iX4
The dashboard follows the iX3: Panoramic Vision projects information across the base of the windscreen, above a 17.9-inch central display, with a 3D head-up display alongside. The Heart of Joy computer controls the drivetrain and chassis together. Motorway Assistant allows hands-free driving at up to 130 km/h on approved roads in a number of countries. The boot holds 490 litres, or 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded, plus 58 litres under the front bonnet.
